8 perfect pickles and preserves

There’s nothing finer served up with some thick, crusty bread and a big hunk of cheese than a tasty, spicy pickle. Especially when it’s of the homemade variety. Here are some delicious pickle recipes from food bloggers around the world you’ve just got to try out; all entries in last month’s Spice Trail challenge.

Linda from Mrs Portly’s Kitchen brings us her Tomatillo and Tomato Chutney (1), a delicious variation on her mum’s faithful standby, green tomato chutney, and using her very own homegrown tomatillos.

Next up there’s my Simple Beetroot Pickle (2), spiced with star anise, cloves and allspice and the perfect accompaniment to Norwegian gravlaks.

Kate, aka The Gluten Free Alchemist, has cooked up a wonderful batch of Green Bean and Caramelised Onion Chutney (3), making the most of the green beans in her veg patch she was still picking well into October.

We have a terrific trio of pickles from Linsy at Home Cook Food, all boasting sensational Indian spices. She’s created a Carrot and Green Chili Pickle (4), which would be right at home as part of a Gujarati thali. Then there’s her unusual Apple and Sprouted Chickpeas Pickle (5), using apples from her neighbour’s tree. And finally, she gives us a Sweet and Spicy Lemon Pickle (6), Linsy’s own childhood favourite.

Another taste of India up next in the form of my Mango and Chilli Chutney (7). My Mum was staying with us when I made this and she gave it the thumbs up. And trust me, Mum knows a good mango chutney when she tastes one!

And last but not least is a fantastically Fiery Pineapple Chutney (8) from Jill at Lapin d’Or & More, who is working her way through her chilli crop. I’ve never tried a pineapple chutney before but I’m rather hankering after some now.

And the winner is…

cheese & olives hamper

This month’s prize was a fabulous cheese and olives hamper from the good people at Serenata Hampers, featuring a special selection of English cheeses, garlic and chilli olives and crunchy oatcakes – just perfect for eating your spicy pickles with.

Alexander from Serenata had the tough job of deciding our overall winner, and in the end she selected… Linda from Mrs Portly’s Kitchen with her tempting Tomatillo and Tomato Chutney. Congratulations to you Linda – your hamper will be on its way very soon. Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone for their perfect autumn pickles, and, if you’re quick, you still have time to enter November’s Spice Trail peppercorn challenge.

  1. Oh my goodness! I think that’s the first thing I’ve won since a plum pudding in a tombola at the village fete when I was about eight. I’m chuffed to bits, especially as there were so many brilliant recipes again this month. Thank you so much. L xx

    1. Seriously? Well, that makes it all the more special then! A fabulous entry and a very worthy winner. Email me your address and we’ll get the hamper out to you as soon as possible…

      1. Seriously! Although I think I won a toothbrush in the bran tub at the same fete. The hamper sounds infinitely preferable. Will send you a jar in time for Christmas! Lxx
